The uncomfortable arithmetic

The True Cost of
Industrial Pet Food.

The monthly price is not the cost. The cost shows up at age 4 — as diseases with names, treatments, and invoices. This page lists them, what each one costs in India, and the five-year arithmetic the packet never prints.

The supplement aisle is the industry's confession: every joint chew, omega-3 capsule, probiotic and dental stick on the shelf is a commercial admission that the base diet is insufficient. You pay for the deficiency twice — once in the bag, once in the aisle.

Why It Happens — in one line each

The short version. The full biochemistry lives in the science posts.

Premium wet pouches

The pouch is mostly water and fat

At 75–82% moisture, the label calories cannot come from lean protein alone — the gap is filled with rendered fat and oils. You are paying premium prices to ship water, with protein on the label and fat in the maths.

Sterilisation cooks the vitamins out

Retort sterilisation at ~121°C destroys much of the B-vitamins and degrades taurine — so a synthetic premix is added back to rescue the label. The label numbers survive the process; the food-matrix nutrition does not.

“Chicken” is a legal term, not a cut

By-product definitions permit a very different ingredient reality than the marketing photo — and India has no compositional definition for pet-label “chicken” at all.

Premium kibble

Extrusion sells you denatured protein

At 150–180°C, extrusion damages lysine and taurine and oxidises the omega-3s on the bag — then a vitamin spray recovers the label. The protein % reflects the mix before the process, not what your dog absorbs after it.

The base is starch a carnivore didn’t order

The first ingredients of most premium kibble are grains, legumes or starch. Cats have near-zero pancreatic amylase — they are simply not built for a starch-led diet, and the feline obesity data shows it.

Palatants manufacture the addiction

“My dog only eats this brand” is a sprayed-on flavour signal doing its job. That is also why switching to real food takes a 2–4 week transition — the animal is waiting for a chemical cue, not rejecting better food.

Sachets are exact (cat ₹138/day · 20 kg dog ₹330/day at list); the rest is your groceries — your market, your prices, often less on a family basket. For a cat that lands roughly 40% below premium wet, with real named meat you chose yourself.

Wet pouch: ₹155/85g (India premium market). Kibble: premium-brand adult average. Growlrr sachets at list (see pricing); grocery range at Chennai retail — your market and family-basket buying can land lower. Vet estimates: Chennai/Bengaluru/Mumbai specialist pricing. Kibble is the cheapest food and the most expensive diet on this page — that is the point.
