Large & giant breeds — the calcium window

The single biggest way breed changes feeding is size, and Growlrr BowlBalancer handles it before you ever think about it: a large or giant-breed puppy is put on a growth correction that caps calcium, while a small-breed puppy gets a straightforward floor. You pick the breed size; the engine picks the rule.

Here is the actual mechanism. Adult dogs protect themselves from calcium excess by down-regulating how much they absorb from the gut, so an adult formula only needs a calcium floor. Large and giant-breed puppies up to about six months cannot do this — they absorb calcium passively and near-completely regardless of how much is in the bowl (Tryfonidou 2002). The surplus is delivered straight to a fast-remodelling skeleton and drives developmental orthopedic disease: osteochondrosis, retained cartilage cores, hypertrophic osteodystrophy, bowed legs (Hazewinkel 1989). Crucially the damage tracks absolute calcium intake, not just the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio — a textbook-correct ratio at an excessive total calcium still causes harm. So large-breed growth needs a two-sided window: calcium held between 3.0 and 4.0 grams per 1000 kcal, with a tight calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. Getting this right by hand is where home feeding goes wrong: a scoop of bone meal or a shell of eggshell "for calcium" is exactly what tips a giant-breed puppy over the ceiling. Who it applies to

Expected adult weight ≥ ~25–30 kg — Labrador, GSD, Golden, Rottweiler, Boxer, Great Dane, Mastiff, St Bernard, Newfoundland. Below ~25 kg mature, developmental orthopedic disease is not a concern and a normal growth floor applies. Cats have no large-breed analogue.

The window

Dalmatians — purine and urate stones

A Dalmatian is the clearest example of a breed whose diet genuinely must differ, and it is a diet Growlrr BowlBalancer is built to complete rather than fight: the DogPro-L correction runs on a low-purine palatant, so it slots into a Dalmatian feeding plan where an ordinary adult block would not.

The reason is genetic. Dalmatians carry a variant in the urate transporter gene that stops the kidney from reabsorbing uric acid, and they cannot convert uric acid to allantoin the way other dogs do — so uric acid is excreted directly into urine. At normal dietary purine loads it crystallises into urate stones, causing bloody urine, recurrent infections and, in males, dangerous urethral blockage. The dietary target is low purine — roughly under 100 mg of uric-acid equivalent per day — which in practice means egg white and lean white protein rather than organ meat, oily fish like sardines, or yeast-rich umami palatants. Higher urine volume also helps by diluting the urate below its crystallisation point, which is why a vet may deliberately add a small amount of salt to drive thirst. The catch for fresh feeders is that standard adult blocks lean on high-purine palatants (yeast extract, liver digest, nucleotide enhancers) to make kibble-imprinted dogs eat. Growlrr’s DogPro-L is dominated by the growth-formula palatant — a simple desalted hydrolysate with none of that enrichment — so it contributes far less purine.

The target

Why the block fits

Taurine-sensitive breeds and heart disease

For breeds that show up in the diet-associated heart-disease literature — Golden Retrievers, Labradors, Cocker Spaniels — Growlrr BowlBalancer removes the variable that causes the problem: taurine is carried in the block, at a welfare floor, on every single day, whatever is in the bowl.

The concern is real and documented. Diet-associated dilated cardiomyopathy in these breeds correlates with taurine depletion in fresh-fed and grain-free-fed dogs (Kaplan 2018, Ontiveros 2020). And here fresh feeding has a specific trap: cooking destroys dietary taurine, so a home-cooked bowl that looks protein-rich can still leave a taurine-sensitive dog short. Because Growlrr delivers purified taurine from the block rather than relying on taurine surviving in cooked meat, the correction does not care how the meal was prepared or how the protein rotation changes week to week. For a fresh-cooked retriever or cocker diet, that block-delivered floor is often the only reliable taurine source in the bowl. Cooking is the trap

Not a treatment

Taurine is a modifiable risk factor, not a cause of structural DCM. A reliable floor is sound preventive nutrition; a dog with clinical DCM is managed by a vet cardiologist.

Copper-predisposed breeds

Copper is the breed topic where the answer is often "the standard correction is already right," and Growlrr BowlBalancer reflects that: for a DNA-cleared dog it makes no copper modification at all, because the biology does the work.

The detail matters. Copper in the block is dosed to a controlled house ceiling, and a homeostatic model of copper handling (Turnlund 1989) shows that even when dietary copper is delivered at ~115% of requirement, tissue copper settles around 105% — because fractional absorption falls as intake rises. The hepatic ceiling is mechanistic, not engineered, and the grocery’s copper contribution is small relative to the tightly controlled block; an older lever that swapped mutton for chicken to cut copper now moves tissue copper by less than one percentage point and has been retired. That is the correct picture for a Labrador or Golden Retriever cleared for copper-metabolism markers by a responsible breeder — no special copper diet is needed. Two genuine exceptions exist. The Bedlington Terrier’s COMMD1 copper-storage disease breaks the excretion pathway so that even normal dietary copper accumulates dangerously — but this is DNA-testable and expected of responsible breeding lines; a cleared Bedlington is copper-normal and feeds standard. A dog with confirmed elevated liver copper on biopsy needs therapeutic restriction below what any block can reach, which is clinical territory.

So the useful thing Growlrr does here is restraint: it does not over-engineer a copper problem that a cleared dog does not have, and it is explicit about the line where diet ends and veterinary management begins. For the retriever breeds, the block’s real contribution is taurine, not copper.

The self-limiting ceiling

Dietary copper at ~115% of requirement settles to ~105% in tissue as absorption falls with intake (Turnlund 1989). For a DNA-cleared retriever, standard feeding is the correct protocol — no copper modification.

Bedlington Terrier

COMMD1 copper-storage disease is DNA-testable and screened out of responsible lines. A cleared Bedlington feeds standard; an affected one needs vet-supervised copper restriction and chelation — beyond any diet.

The clinical line

A dog with elevated hepatic copper confirmed on biopsy needs restriction below what a block can deliver. That is a referral, not a formulation change — and Growlrr says so plainly.

Flat-faced breeds — weight and the bowl

Flat-faced breeds do not have a metabolic defect to correct — their issue is structural, and it is one Growlrr BowlBalancer is unusually well suited to, because the engine doses calories to the individual dog rather than to a breed chart on the side of a bag.

The problem is a reinforcing cycle: brachycephalic anatomy, selection for a compact body and a largely indoor life add up to a breed chronically prone to obesity, and excess weight worsens the airway obstruction that already limits how much a Pug or French Bulldog can exercise. Well-meaning owners tend to read the "sad face" as hunger and overfeed. Cats — Persians, Maine Coons and Ragdolls

For the pedigree cat breeds with known predispositions, Growlrr BowlBalancer’s CatCore correction is unusually well matched — it addresses three separate clinical axes at once, from the block, without asking the owner to manage any of them.

Take the Persian, and the same logic covers the Maine Coon and Ragdoll. First, taurine: these lines carry elevated hypertrophic cardiomyopathy risk, and taurine deficiency drives feline myocardial failure (Pion 1987); cats cannot make enough taurine and cooking depletes what is in the meat, so CatCore delivers taurine at over 150% of requirement from the block — constant, independent of diet and cooking. Second, iodine: feline hyperthyroidism is strongly associated with low and fluctuating dietary iodine (Alborough 2022), and commercial foods swing 14–31% batch to batch; CatCore delivers iodine as encapsulated calcium iodate at about 2% variation, a steady supply every day, which for over-represented breeds like the Persian is the single most valuable nutritional feature.
