Can dogs be vegetarian? (and why cats can’t)

The biology behind it: cats are obligate carnivores that must get taurine (an amino acid cats must get from food), arachidonic acid and preformed vitamin A from animal tissue and barely handle carbohydrate; dogs are facultative — omnivorous by adaptation but carnivore-leaning — and neither species evolved for the high-starch base of most kibble.

The obligate carnivore: cats

Cats are obligate carnivores. Their biology expects animal protein, animal fat, taurine, arachidonic acid and preformed vitamin A — nutrients present in physiologically useful amounts only in animal tissue (cats cannot make enough taurine themselves, and cannot convert beta-carotene to vitamin A the way dogs and humans do). They also have very limited capacity to digest carbohydrate. A cat's diet should be overwhelmingly animal-based by calories — yet the first ingredients on many "premium" cat kibbles are grains or legumes.

The facultative predator: dogs

Dogs co-evolved with humans and are omnivorous by adaptation: unlike cats, they carry the enzyme machinery to use some starch. But adaptation is not the same as optimum. Dogs remain carnivore-leaning, and they thrive on a diet anchored in animal protein. High-starch kibble exists because extrusion, shelf life and national logistics demand a starch binder — not because carnivores evolved to eat it.

Why the base matters

Feeding a carnivore a bowl that is half starch pushes its metabolism toward chronic stress on glucose handling and body condition, and low-moisture kibble adds ongoing water strain. Keeping lean body condition across a dog's life is itself associated with healthier aging (Kealy 2002). None of this is a disease claim — it is simply that a species-appropriate base gives the body less to compensate for.

Thriving vs. surviving. A dog "can" survive on starch and lentils; a cat "can" limp along on a fish-flavoured biscuit. Survival is not the goal. Aligning the daily bowl with what each species actually is — animal-first, diverse, complete — is.
