What it depends on

  • Taurine — cats cannot make their own, and a growing kitten must have it supplied deliberately; a plain home bowl is riskier than a puppy’s without it.

How is feeding a kitten different from feeding an adult cat?

A growing kitten is not a small adult cat. From weaning to about twelve months it needs more calcium, phosphorus and protein, and DHA-forward omega-3 for brain and eye development, than an adult ever will — and taurine, an essential amino acid cats cannot synthesise. Its bowl has to carry more of all of these, sized to the growth stage rather than to a maintenance dose.

Why does a kitten need taurine, and can homemade food provide it?

Taurine is essential for cats — a deficiency causes blindness and dilated cardiomyopathy (a serious heart disease) — and unlike dogs, cats cannot make enough of their own. Taurine sits in animal tissue but is partly lost in cooking and water, so a home-cooked kitten bowl needs taurine added deliberately and dosed to the kitten, which is exactly what the growth sachet does.

When do I switch a kitten to adult food?
