Is The Farmer’s Dog worth it? What to weigh up
What The Farmer's Dog is
The Farmer's Dog is a subscription that delivers pre-portioned, gently cooked fresh dog food, refrigerated, matched to a profile you fill in for your dog. Like other "complete fresh, delivered" services, its pitch is real food without the cooking or the maths — and for many owners that convenience genuinely lands.
What it does well
Fairly stated: fresh, human-grade-style ingredients; gentle cooking instead of high-heat extrusion; portions measured for you; and a clear improvement on a cereal-first bag. Against low-tier kibble, it wins.
What to weigh up
The questions are about the architecture, not the sourcing:
- The base is chosen for you. The recipe is built on a brand-selected base that commonly includes carbohydrate — rice, potato, legumes — you didn't pick and can't swap. You don't control the cuts or the balance of the bowl.
- One nutrient density per recipe. Only the portion is personalised, not the nutrient correction. Every dog on that recipe gets the same profile per calorie, regardless of how active it is.
- You are paying to ship refrigerated food and water. A premium price plus a cold chain — and in India frozen fresh delivery remains a city-by-city affair, not a national network.
The fresh + balanced alternative
A cook-fresh-and-balance bowl keeps the fresh food and hands back the two choices a delivery service makes for you: the protein (buy it locally, swap it freely) and the correction — a weight-dosed Growlrr BowlBalancer™ sachet that completes the bowl to every NRC 2006 floor, sized to your dog rather than averaged across a recipe. No cold chain, no shipped water; completeness validated across 1 Million+ simulations at Wilson C/R 95/99. The same logic holds for cats, animal-protein swaps only.
